1. Salt

Gather it:

  • Salt- ½ tsp
  • Lukewarm water – 1 glass

Prepare it:

  1. Take a glass of lukewarm water and add ½ tsp of salt to it, and stir well.
  2. Use it twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening to rinse your mouth.
  3. This works to get rid of gingivitis.
  4. Follow this remedy every day till the swelling of the gums is reduced considerably.

Method 2: Salt and Mustard Oil

Gather it:

  • Mustard oil – 1 tbsp
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • Small bowl- 1

Prepare it:

  1. Take 1 tbsp of mustard oil in a small bowl and add ½ tsp of salt to it.
  2. Mix both the ingredients well to make a smooth paste.
  3. Massage your gums by this paste with circular motions for 2 minutes.
  4. Now gargle with warm water and repeat this daily for 2 or 3 times till the swelling reduces completely.

2. Turmeric

TurmericTurmeric is loaded with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of turmeric can reduce plaques, gingivitis and other bacterial activities on the teeth and the gum.

Method 1: Mustard and Salt Massage

Gather it:

  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • Mustard oil – ½ tsp
  • Salt – 1 tsp
  • Small bowl – 1

Prepare it:

  1. Take 1 tsp of turmeric powder in a small bowl.
  2. Add 1/2 tsp each of salt and mustard oil to it.
  3. Mix all the ingredients well to make a paste.
  4. Apply it on your swollen teeth and gums.
  5. Massage your gum and teeth with this paste daily once or twice for 5 to 10 minutes.
  6. Wash your mouth with normal water.
  7. Follow this remedy regularly to get rid of gingivitis.

Method 2: Turmeric and Vitamin E Oil

Gather it:

  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Vitamin E oil – 1 tsp
  • Warm water – 2 tsp
  • Small bowl – 1

Prepare it:

  1. You can get Vitamin E oil from any online store or the supermarket.
  2. Take ½ tsp of turmeric powder in a small bowl and add 1 tsp of Vitamin E oil to it to make a paste.
  3. Put the paste on the affected gum and leave it for 10 minutes
  4. Rinse with warm water.
  5. Do this daily twice for a month to treat as well as prevent of gingivitis.

Method 3: Brush up with Turmeric

Gather it:

  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • Water – 2 tsp
  • Small bowl – 1

Prepare it:

  1. Take 1 tsp of turmeric powder in a small bowl and add 2 tsp of water to it.
  2. Mix the ingredients well to make a smooth paste.
  3. Brush your teeth daily with this paste.
  4. Repeat this remedy twice daily for a few weeks to get rid of gingivitis.

3. Oil Pulling

Coconut OilOil pulling helps in reducing the bacteria that cause gingivitis. It has the ability to reduce plaque, gum diseases. It also helps to maintain good oral health. You can use coconut oil for oil pulling.

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is antimicrobial in nature. This oil also has the capacity to prevent tooth decay.

Gather it:

  • Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
  • Lukewarm water – 1 glass

Prepare it:

  1. Take 1 tbsp of coconut oil and put it in your mouth.
  2. Swish, push and suck the oil through the teeth.
  3. Spit the oil out and rinse the mouth with lukewarm water.
  4. Do this oil pulling in every morning before brushing your teeth.
  5. Repeat this remedy daily for a month to get rid of gingivitis.

Note: Start this with just 5 minutes a day. Gradually increase it to 10, 15 and 20 minutes. Twenty minutes is the maximum time for swishing. Remember, the longer you pull, the more bacteria you can remove. If your jaws are aching, then slow down the process.

4. Baking Soda

Baking SodaBaking soda neutralizes the acidity in the mouth and prevents the sugars from causing any kind of damage to the enamel. Baking soda also cures the bleeding gum.

Baking soda works as a natural antiseptic to prevent infections, so we can also use it to cure gingivitis.

  • Baking soda – ¼ tsp
  • Warm water – ½ tsp
  • Small bowl -1

  1. Take ¼ tsp of baking soda in a bowl and add warm water to it.
  2. Mix the ingredients well to make a paste.
  3. Apply the paste on your gums and leave for 2 minutes.
  4. Rinse with warm water.
  5. Use this method for 2 to 3 times in a week to get rid of gingivitis.

5. Lemon

Hot LemonadeLemon contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also rich in Vitamin C and fights many infections.

Lemon kills the bacteria that cause the gingivitis. The acid content in it dissolves the plaque and strengthens the gums.

Method 1: Lemon Mouthwash

Gather it:

  • Lemon juice – 2 tbsp
  • Warm water – 1 glass

Prepare it:

  1. Add 2 tbsp of lemon juice to a glass of water and mix well.
  2. Use this solution as a mouthwash after brushing your teeth.
  3. Repeat this remedy to cure the bleeding gums.

Method 2: Lemon Juice and Salt

Gather it:

  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Salt – ½ tsp

  1. Take a little salt and mix it with 1 tbsp of lemon juice.

6. Aloe Vera

  • A peeler
  • A spoon

  2. Peel one side of the leaf with the help of a peeler.
  3. Now, take out the pulp with a spoon.
  4. Rub the affected gums with the aloe vera pulp.
  5. Leave it for 10 minutes and gargle with normal water.

7. Guava Leaves

The unripe guava contains a good amount of tannic, malic, oxalic, phosphoric acids, calcium and manganese. Chewing guava leaves is very healthy for teeth and gums. It helps to stop bleeding from the gums. It also helps to treats bad breath.

Method 1: Chewing Guava Leaves

Gather it:

  • Tender guava leaves – 4 to 5

Prepare it:

  1. Take 4 to 5 tender guava leaves and clean them with fresh water.
  2. Chew the leaves and then spit out.
  3. Follow this remedy twice a day for 3 weeks to cure as well as prevent gingivitis.

Method 2: Brush with Guava Leaves

Gather it:

  • Tender guava leaves – 5 to 6
  • Water – ½ glass

Prepare it:

  1. Take 5 to 6 tender guava leaves and wash them with water.
  2. Rub the guava leaves on your teeth to brush them.
  3. Use this method daily to get rid of gingivitis.

8. Clove

ClovesGetting cloves is not at all a big deal as they are easily available in your kitchen. Cloves and clove oil help you to reduce gingivitis.

  1. Chew 2 to 3 cloves 3 times a day.

Gather it:

  • Clove oil – 1 tsp
  • Warm water – 1 glass

Prepare it:

  1. Take a 1 tsp of clove oil in your hand.
  2. Rub it on the gums with your finger and leave it for 5 minutes.
  3. Then rinse with warm water.
  4. Follow this process 2 times a day to get rid of gingivitis.

Method 3: Gargle with Clove Oil

Gather it:

  • Clove oil – 1 tsp
  • Warm water – 1 glass

Prepare it:

  1. Add 1 tsp of clove oil to a glass of warm water and gargle.
  2. Repeat this process daily to get relief from gingivitis

Note: Pregnant women and kids who are using blood thinning medicine should avoid cloves or its oil.

9. Peppermint

Nettle and Peppermint TeaPeppermint is used in the preparation of many capsules and tinctures. Peppermint oil is well known to be an effective herbal medicine for gingivitis.

Peppermint Mouthwash

Gather it:

  • Peppermint leaves – 5 to 6

Prepare it:

  1. Take 5 to 6 peppermint leaves and soak them in water.
  2. After 30 minutes, take out the leaves and use the water as a mouthwash to get rid of gingivitis.

10. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that kill fungus, virus and bacteria. Tea tree oil reduces the bleeding and inflammation of the gums.  It works best on gingivitis.

Brush with Tea Tree Oil

Gather it:

  • Tea tree oil – 1 drop
  • Toothpaste of your preference

Prepare it:

  1. Add a drop of tea tree oil to your toothpaste before brushing your teeth.
  2. Follow this remedy daily to get rid of gingivitis. You can also use tree tea oil which contains the gel.

Note: Do not swallow the tree tea oil as it leads to irritation in the stomach and may also cause diarrhea. It is better to consult a dentist before using tea tree oil because many pieces of research delivered mixed results and more studies are required to know the effectiveness of the oil.

Tips to Prevent Gingivitis

It is very easy to treat as well as prevent gingivitis by the use of the simple tips that are mentioned below. Follow them and protect your teeth from further damages.

  • Visit the dentist to do the dental check up regularly.
  • Use a soft toothbrush for cleaning your teeth.
  • Brush your teeth twice daily.
  • Use toothpaste with antibacterial and antiseptic properties.
  • Floss your teeth and scrape your tongue regularly.
  • Avoid tobacco as it damages your teeth and gums.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash to avoid dental problems like bleeding and pain.
  • Consume the food which contains enough amount of calcium.
  • Consume the foods rich in Vitamin C to promote oral health. You can also take the supplements.
  • Drink up to 4 ounces of cranberry juice daily as it helps in preventing bacteria from sticking your teeth.
  • Drink peppermint tea at least once in a day to get rid of gingivitis.
  • Use peppermint or tea tree oil toothpaste to prevent gingivitis.
  • Intake of Vitamin D will also help in reducing gum diseases.
  • If you like sweets, then limit its consumption as bacteria will grow on sweets.
