Whether your child has a deep cough, bad cough, a cold, runny nose or fever, you can try these mild, effective, and safe home remedies. A cold or a chronic cough usually takes about 5 to 7 days to run its course. These home remedies may not relieve cough problems immediately, but will help your child to feel a lot better.

1. Steamy Air (all ages)

Breathing moist air helps to loosen the accumulated mucus in the nasal passages. What you need here is a humidifier, cool mist vaporizer, or a steamy bathroom. A warm bath has an extra advantage of relaxing your child and curing the cough.

Things you need:

  • Menthol Oil- 2-3 drops
  • Water- 1 full tub (for bath)

How to Use it:

  1. Add 2-3 drops of menthol oil to the bath water for children above the age of 2 . It helps to get rid of a congestion.
  2. Give a warm bath to your baby in a steamy bathroom. Let a hot shower run for 2-3 minutes before making ready the tub for your child.
  3. Have a humidifier or a cool-mist vaporizer in your baby’s room, when he/she is sleeping, resting, or sitting inside the room.
  4. If you are not planning to give a bath to your child, then turn on the hot shower, close the bathroom door and windows, and sit with your child in the steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes.

2. Saline Drops and Bulb Syringes (all ages)

Saline drops help in clearing the nose, when a child is too young to blow the nose. For small babies, a bulb syringe clears  the stuffy nose, which hinders breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. Try using it before 15 minutes of feeding.

Things you need:

  • Warm water- 8 ounce
  • Salt- ½ tsp

How to Use it:

  1. Dissolve about ½ tsp of salt in 8 ounces of warm water.
  2. Make fresh saline water every day and store it in a clean, covered glass jar. Don’t keep this for more than 24 hours, as bacteria can grow in the solution.
  3. Slant your child’s head back, or lay on it’s back with a rolled-up towel supporting her head. Put 2 or 3 drops of saline solution into each nostril to loosen the mucus, or make it thin. After this, try to keep your baby’s head still for about 30 seconds.
  4. Squeeze the bulb of the nozzle. After that softly insert the rubber tip into the baby’s nostril.
  5. Slowly release the bulb to accumulate the mucus and the saline solution.
  6. Now, remove the nozzle and press the bulb tightly to eject the mucus into a tissue.
  7. Wipe the nozzle before repeating with the other nostril.
  8. Repeat this process if required, but don’t use saline drops for more than 4 days.

3. Honey for Toddler Cough (1 year and above)
